Walking

Walking in the Govilon area is one of the "musts" for all visitors. Residents do a great deal of it! We are building an extensive guide to residents' favourite walks in and around Govilon, and already we have received a number of submissions from villagers, which include suggestions for a leisurely half-hour stroll to a full day's hike over the mountain!
Please bear with us as we complete the web pages for this ambitious project which will eventually be linked to our drop-down map, and include photographs taken on each route.

If you're looking for suggestions right now, have a look at our map. We've labelled some of the key features of interest, and the quiet lanes, cycle track on the Old Railway and Canal Towpath all provide easy walking for all the family!

If you have a favourite walk in this area, whether it be long or short, from the Sugar Loaf to Skirrid, from Blaenavon to Clydach Gorge or just a loop around the canal to the Pub, please write and tell us about it!
Just click on the "Tell Us More" link in the side bar.

Cycling - Energetic

The many bridlepaths, tracks, and lanes that criss-cross thr hillsides around Govilon provide the ideal landscape for the serious off-road cyclist.

The well known trails at Cwm Carn are less than half an hours drive away.

Cycling - Touring

The area is well suited to touring with fantastic scenery to explore. National cycle Route 46 passes through Govilon on the now abandoned Abergavenny to Merthyr railway track. This provides a quiet traffic free way to explore the area.

Canals

The Monmouthshire & Breconshire Canal, affectionately known by the boating fraternity as the Mon & Brec meanders through Govilon dividing the village in two. Running for 35 miles from Cwmbran to Brecon it is one of the prettiest canals on the waterway system of Britain. Whether you walk along it or boat on it you get spectacular and unusual views of the Usk Valley. The towpath is level and so provides easy walking. Access can be made at the many bridges along its route and there is a main car park situated just off the Blaenavon road next to the historic Ware House at Govilon Wharf – now the Offices of British Waterways for this area. Boats can be hired for cruising at Llanfoist and Gilwern whilst fishing licences are available at the waterways office, Govilon Wharf.
